He or She – Scratch to See!

I will just come out and say it: The concept of a gender reveal and making a huge deal about the baby’s sex isn’t my style. I didn’t want a party or event, a surprise, a pink or blue cake, and especially not any silly sayings. It’s just not my jam.

However, I understand that finding out if a baby is a boy or a girl is exciting, so I wanted to do something that could surprise my family, even if I didn’t want to be surprised myself. I came up with this idea for scratch-off gender reveal cards that I could mail or give in person to special family members who were excited to find out whether I was having a boy or a girl. It still has a touch of surprise and allows the family to be involved in this exciting time!

If you and your partner also want to be surprised, you can also make these easily and have a designated person do the final assembly, so you can scratch off your own card if you want a surprise as well!

To make this DIY project, I used my Silhouette Cameo, Canva, and some Printable Scratch-Off Sticker Paper to design and create these special cards. Today I’m sharing how it’s done so that you can recreate these yourself and give your family a fun gender reveal surprise!

Materials You’ll Need for Gender Reveal Scratch-off Cards:

  • Silhouette Cameo and Silhouette Studio software (Or a comparable cutting machine and software, such as Cricut)
    • For this project, you’ll need to utilize the Print & Cut feature. There are many tutorials on how this works.
  • Card template
    • I used this baby onesie card template purchased from the Silhouette Store.
    • You can find other baby onesie card templates by clicking here.
    • You can do any shape you’d like and create your own for free if you’d prefer.
  • A variety of cardstock or scrapbook paper in baby hues – pinks, blues, and yellows are great!
  • Printable Scratch-Off Sticker Paper
  • Adhesive roller, glue, or tape

Step One – Cut and Assemble the Cards

First, you’ll use your cutting machine to cut out the card template of your choice. Mine consisted of a large foldable onesie and a smaller onesie shape. Use a variety of baby hues – blues, pinks, and yellows. Make sure to mix and match colors as to not ruin the surprise!

Here is my assembled card. I used yellow and pink paper for this example.

Next, I used Canva (one of my favorite websites!) to design a message to go on the inside of the card. You can easily do this by creating a blank design on Canva, choosing a font for your message, and adding some graphics if desired. If you prefer, you can download a generic message like mine here:

He or She Template

I printed these on regular white paper and used an adhesive roller to attach the message to the inside of the card.

Step Two – Create the Gender Reveal Shapes

Now you need to create the “It’s a Girl” or “It’s a Boy” surprise to go on the front of the card. This will be underneath the scratch-off sticker and will be the part that announces baby’s gender to the card recipient!

I chose to use a heart shape. I went ahead and created “It’s a Boy” and “It’s a Girl” messages in Canva so that I could easily assemble the cards as soon as I got back from my ultrasound with the big news!

Use the Silhouette Print & Cut feature to cut out the heart shapes with the gender reveal messages. If you would like to use my template, click this link to download: Gender Reveal Scratch-off Cards – Silhouette Cut Files

Open the Silhouette Studio file titled “Reveal Shapes – Boy and Girl.” Use the Print & Cut feature to print the designs onto regular white cardstock paper. Then feed the design into your cutting machine to cut out the heart shapes.

Use an adhesive roller, glue, or tape to adhere the shapes to the front of your cards, as shown below.

Step Three – Create the Gender Reveal Scratch-off Stickers

We have to hide the surprise, of course! This is the tricky part – but I promise not too tricky! You’ll need to use Printable Scratch-Off Sticker Paper to create the stickers that will hide the surprise you just adhered to the front of each card.

I created a sticker shape that would fit over the reveal heart that we just adhered to the card. I designed this in Canva to say “He or She? Scratch here to see!” but there are many phrases you could use! To use my Silhouette Studio file, click here: Gender Reveal Scratch-off Cards – Silhouette Cut Files

This time, open the file titled “He or She Stickers – Print and Cut.”

Using your printer, print this design onto the Scratch-Off Sticker Paper. Then use your cutting machine to cut out the final heart-shaped stickers.

Step Four – Assemble the Scratch-Off Cards

All that’s left is to place your stickers onto your cards! Each heart shape should fit right over the “reveal” text to completely conceal it. When your recipient is ready to reveal the surprise, they will scratch-off the sticker to reveal the message hidden below!

Now your cards are completely assembled and ready to be sent off for a fun gender reveal!

Step Five – Send off your gender reveal DIY cards!

Whether you are mailing your cards or delivering them by hand, now it’s time for your recipients to find out the big surprise! My family thoroughly enjoyed scratching off the sticker to reveal the gender and that they were getting a new BOY addition to the family.

Upon receiving the card, you can use a credit card, coin, or other sharp object to gently scratch off the sticker and reveal the hidden message.

How do you feel about gender reveals? If you have kids, how did you announce the gender to your family members? Let me know in the comments!

If you end up using this idea, I’ve love to see your results!
